The furniture you chose to put in a room makes a statement about the people that live there. But portraits are a history of those people, a captured moment in time.
The story behind a face intrigues me. It always has. It is the reason I am a portrait photographer. I love to learn about a person’s story, about their relationships, and then wonder, “How can I visually express that story in a meaningful way?”
Making the decision to have a portrait created is not easy. I remember the first time I commissioned a portrait. You worry about the reason you’re doing it. You wonder if it will really be appreciated. During the session you worry about how you look. I get it. I know how you feel. That is why I take this journey with you, every step of the way to insure you get the image that you want.
Everyone has their reason for having a portrait created at a particular time. Some are joyous. Children and grandchildren are photographed because they are an expansion of the family and an extension of us. Yet I can’t tell you how often someone has come to me for a portrait and informed me, “this is for my casket.” It wasn’t because they were dying; it was because they saw in their own minds the way they wanted to be remembered. They wanted a legacy.
A John Mitchell portrait is a unique experience, and requires a commitment on the part of the subject to join me on a journey of discovery and expression. It takes time because you’re one of a kind. I don’t have a “portrait lighting set-up” because your face is as unique as the story behind it. I don’t have a lab that mass produces my portraits, because fine art is not mass produced and you are a piece of art.
Most important, your story deserves to be told.
