In most parts of Canada, just about every town or city of any significant size has a “Farmer’s Market.” Many lay claim to having the first, a claim hard to prove or dispute. Cambridge, formerly Galt is no different in this regard. The Cambridge Farmer’s Market, still known to many as the Galt Market, has history dating back to the mid 1830’s. In 1887 the Galt Market was constructed on the corner of Dickson and Ainslsie Streets. It was expanded with a two story addition in 1896. The market still stands in that same location.

Over the years restorative renovations have insured the market bulding will be there for future generations. Upgrades included steel girders and making the market accessible to all people. Currently restoration to the exterior is being carried out, but the market is still operating every Saturday.
1984 saw the building receive a heritage designation.
