CbridgeStrong – A Caring Community

I had a Strawberry Shortcake blizzard yesterday. I had it before I had my lunch. My mother says I always asked what was for “bezirt” so I knew how much room to leave. If she gave me “bezirt” first I wouldn’t have had to ask.

Yesterday I did it my way – “BEZIRT” first, and I’m glad I did.  Let me explain.

I’m a Prestonian! Now part of Cambridge, but I’m not from Cambridge, I’m from Preston!  It might be part of a medium size city, but Preston and Prestonians still have the big heart of a small town.

You may have heard the name “Katie Star.” At the age of only 16 months Katie was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Katie’s a fighter and she beat cancer. However, it came back, and she beat it again. Now at the age of 6 she’s fighting for her life once again in a battle to beat cancer.  Katie’s a fighter with a big heart, and I’m told a big smile that can light up a room. But she’s not alone. Her big heart and ability to fight was matched yesterday by Kathy Johnson, owner of the Dairy Queen in Preston.

Kathy decided to make Christmas come early and exactly six months before Christmas she gave Katie Star and the entire Towne of Preston an early Christmas gift.  For one day only one dollar of every “Blizzard” sold would be donated to Katie Star and family.

I’m glad I went at lunch time because when you do something like this in Preston it becomes the gift that keeps on giving. Last evening they were lined up. They were neighbours coming together to help another neighbour in time of need.  Preston is a community and it is #CbridgeStrong.

But would you expect anything less in a town that turned a city green. It was right here in Preston that the “Green Ribbon Campaign” started for organ donation and green ribbons showed up all over town in support of Kayla Baker.

Those ribbons were still prominent last evening as a community came together to show support for a new hero. In addition to the dollar from every “Blizzard” sold, there was a donation tub on the counter inside.  If you didn’t get a chance to make your donation you can still help.
